With just days until the first day of practice for the 2008-09 season, it was announced today that Penn head coach Mike Starrett has resigned his position as head coach and physical education teacher at Penn High School.
According to the WSBT-TV, Athletic Director Ben Karasiak revealed that Starrett resigned "for personal reasons". Karasiak and another Penn administrator declined to comment on the resignation, stating that it was a "personnel matter."
Starret served as head coach of the Penn program for just one year, taking the Kings(wo)men to an 18-4 record last season with the help of Penn's fabulous inside-outside combination of Division I recruits Lily Svete (Florida) and Kelsey Reynolds (Boston College). Starrett was hired last year after long time head coach Dominic Ball retired from the coaching ranks.
With the practice season just four days away, Penn has named assistant coach Terry Tulchinsky, who has been with the Penn girls basketball program for a number of years, as interim head coach. Along with Svete and Reynolds, the Kings(wo)men return an experienced supporting lineup.
With Tulchinsky's move to head coaching duties, the Penn coaching staff will be reordered, according to WSBT-TV. Scott Geist will move from JV coach to varsity assistant and former Mishawaka High player Kristi Kaniewski goes from freshman coach to JV coach. A freshman coach is to be named.
