  • Bulldogs lose heartbreaker in sectional championship game
In front of a very large and boisterous CP crowd, the Lady Bulldogs saw their hopes for a sectional crown and advancement to regionals go up in smoke in a 3-point loss to Valparaiso.  Much will be made of a crucial half-court bucket by junior Allison Isailovich at the end of the third quarter that was waived off by the officials, even though the buzzer did not blow until the launch was halfway to meeting the bottom of the net.  The officials insisted that the shot was made after time ran out, but film of the game disputes the officials' call.  Nonetheless, the Bulldogs were unable to overcome Valpo's 13 makes of 14 trips to the free throw line in the second half  compared to CP's one make of two during that same time span .  In spite of the lopsided foul count, the Bulldogs were in it to the end, even after they were down by six with two minutes to go.  Frosh Cassie Pruzin scored on a drive through the lane with 1:54 left, bringing the Bulldogs to within four points at 33-37, and then senior Alex Webster broke free from a Valpo double team, thanks to a solid CP screen, to hit a clutch three-pointer 44 seconds later and closing the gap to one.  After two made Valpo free throws, junior Amy Zondor pulled in a rebound off of a CP attempt with :08 seconds on the clock to score on a putback and got the 'Dogs back within one point again.  CP had to foul to stop the clock and after two Valpo freebies with :04 left on the clock, a last second shot by Pruzin rimmed off as time expired giving Valpo a three-point win.  Seniors Alex Webster, Carissa Triplett, Ashley Plumley, Stephanie Swanson and Janel Heneghan finished out their careers with a combined 24 of the Bulldogs 38 points on the night.  The Bulldogs were 15-7 for the 2001-02 season against a schedule that was ranked the 49th-toughest in the state by Sagarin.  (2/11/02)

  • Sectional championship game to be televised
The championship game of the Portage sectional will be televised, Monday, February 11, on the AT&T Cable Network at 7:00 p.m. on Lake Area Channel 3, and network wide as well for other areas.  (2/11/02)

  • Crown Point gets convincing first-round sectional win over Hobart
After winning by 12 at Hobart just two weeks prior, the Bulldogs did it again on a neutral court, defeating the Brickies 46-30 in the bye game of the Portage Sectional.  Crown Point came out strong in the first quarter with a 12-5 run and never relinquished the lead throughout the remainder of the game.  The stellar Bulldogs defense harassed the Brickies into 34 turnover on the night, with senior Alex Webster and frosh Cassie Pruzin combining for 12 of CP's 15 steals. Both were featured in an article in The Times as a result of their backcourt play in the game. (2/11/02)

  • Webster and Triplett named to The Times All- Sectional Team
In its annual preview to the IHSAA Tournament, The Times named Crown Point seniors Alex Webster and Carissa Triplett to its All-Sectional Team for the 4A Portage Sectional.  Crown Point was also picked as the sectional dark horse in deference to favorite Valparaiso.   (2/11/02)

  • Lady Bulldogs fall three times in free-throw fest at Ft. Wayne Luers
All three Crown Point teams (frosh, JV and varsity) traveled to the inhospitable atmosphere at Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers, where whistles were music to the ears for the hosts and frustrating racket for the Bulldogs.  Although exact stats are unavailable, free throws were the difference in both the frosh and JV games.  In the final game of the day, the varsity watched as their opponents went to the line 35 times to four times for CP.  Despite Luers scoring all but two of their 22 fourth-quarter points from the free throw line, the Bulldogs almost pulled off the win with a great team effort.   Leading scorer for Crown Point was senior Alex Webster, who had a career-high 25 points, followed by Carissa Triplett with 10.  The Times recap of the game follows: (2/11/02)

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 56, Crown Point 53:
At Fort Wayne, Alex Webster's 25 points led all scorers, but it wasn't enough to get the Bulldogs (14-6) a tough road victory. Webster was the only CP player in double-digits, while Megan Dossen led Luers with 23 points to boost the Knights' record to 15-5.

  • Bulldogs overwhelm DAC opponent Chesterton
The Lady Bulldogs went on a 43-14 three-quarter tear on Saturday to get a convincing 50-31 DAC win. The young Chesterton Trojans had lost a close one to Highland in OT and beat a good Munster team before meeting the Bulldogs, but the CP press was more than Chesterton could handle.  Leading scorers for CP were Carissa Triplett with 13, Alex Webster with 11 and Cassie Pruzin with 7. (1/14/02)

  • Coach May hits No. 500
Coach May was recognized by Chesterton coach Jack Campbell before tipoff of the game on Saturday for reaching the 500-game milestone with the Lady Bulldogs girls basketball program.  Coach Campbell presented Coach May with a plaque at halfcourt.  (1/14/02)

  • Lady Bulldogs defeat Kankakee Valley Kats
Crown Point traveled to Wheatfield for a mid-week game against the Kats of Kankakee Valley and came home with a 47-35 win.  The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Carissa Triplett with 10 and Blayre Reeves and Cassie Pruzin with 8 apiece.  Pruzin also had an unbelievable 8 steals on the night.  (1/14/02)

  • Webster and Diederich in the Post-Tribune
The friendship of senior Alex Webster and Crown Point gymnast Lisa Diederich was profiled in the Post-Tribune today.  The two very good friends have supported each other, even though they are in very diverse sports.  On a sad note, which is not mentioned in the article, Lisa tore her ACL in a meet at LaPorte last week.  The former floor exercise state champion will be unable to complete her promising senior gymnastics season.  (1/14/02)

  • Photos updated from five games
The CPLB webmaster has had a bit of trouble keeping up with the game recaps, but until they are updated, you can still view photos from games against Valparaiso, Lake Central, Gary Wallace, Martinsville and Kankakee Valley.  All photo pages are linked on the Schedule.  Again, and as always, many thanks to Bob Strempka for all of his fine photography skills that make those great memories in photos possible! (1/14/02)

  • Bulldogs to face Kankakee Valley Lady Kougars on Tuesday
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Wheatfield on Tuesday to face the tall and talented Lady Kougars of Kankakee Valley.  KV is a much better team than their 5-6 record would indicate.  The 3A Kougars have a good inside-outside attack with 6'6 center Amanda DeVries and talented guards Stacey Spurgeon and Lesley Cunningham.  To get to KV High School, take Route 231 south through DeMotte.  Route 231 curves into Route 10 east.  KVHS will be four miles further on the right (south) side of Route 10.  See you there!  (1/6/02)

  • Lady Bulldogs start 2002 with a 36-point conference win
After a rocky finish to the 2001 calendar schedule, the Lady Bulldogs put together a multi-faceted attack to down conference opponent Michigan City on the road in a 68-32 win.  Senior center Carissa Triplett broke out for a team-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and four blocks, and junior Amy Zondor scored a career-high 15 points to lead the Crown Point attack.  Eleven Lady Bulldogs contributed to the winning point total, and seven CP players had three or more rebounds in the game.  Game details can be found in a write up in The Times and on the Michigan City game recap.  (1/6/02)

  • Coach May will mark 500th game with Crown Point on Saturday
Coach Tom May, who began coaching the Lady Bulldogs during the 1980-81 season, will coach his 500th game as the head of the highly-respected Lady Bulldogs program this Saturday at Chesterton.  Coach May's 500th game would have been against Kankakee Valley on Tuesday, but because of the cancellation of the Plymouth game in November, the milestone will be delayed by one game.  (1/6/02)

  • Crown Point finishes 2nd in the CP Shootout
After putting away first-round opponent Gary Wallace by a score of 69-21 in the Crown Point Holiday Shootout on December 29th, the Bulldogs fell 43-25 to the Martinsville Artesians in the championship game.  Martinsville had defeated Carroll (Ft. Wayne) in overtime in the first round to advance to the championship.  The Bulldogs were tied heading into the fourth quarter at 25-25, but failed to score a single point in the final eight minutes, while Martinsville went on an 18-0 run.  (1/6/02)

  • Lady Bulldogs lose a heartbreaker in key DAC game
Crown Point saw a Duneland Conference championship most likely slip away in the last five minutes of a heartbreaking loss to Valpo Saturday night.  Up by 8 points with 5:30 to go in the game, the Bulldog committed five turnovers and missed five free throws, which effectively gave the game to the Valpo Vikings.  Both teams were undefeated coming into the game, and Valpo, unless they are upset along the way, most likely clinched the DAC title with the win.  Leading scorer for Crown Point (7-3) was Alex Webster, who had 17 points to go with 8 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.  Fellow senior Carissa Triplett contributed with 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Complete game details, as well as links to local news coverage, can be found on the Valpo game recap. Next up for the Bulldogs will be Lake Central (9-1) at home on Wednesday.  (12/16/01)

  • Coach May heading towards 500th game with Crown Point
Coach Tom May, who first coached the Lady Bulldogs for the 1980-81 season, will be reaching a career milestone later this season. On Tuesday, January 8, 2002, when the Bulldogs travel to Kankakee Valley, Coach May will be coaching his 500th game as the head girls basketball coach at Crown Point.  During that time, he has amassed a number of team and personal honors, including two state championships, four state finals appearances, and the distinction of being the only coach to head up the coaching staff of the Indiana All-Stars two times.  Coach May is also closing in on his 375th win.  Right now Coach May's career record stands at 370-123 for a noteworthy .750 winning percentage.  (12/16/01)

  • Crown Point wins ugly over the Trojans
In a rematch from last season's Regional loss to Highland, the Bulldogs won this time around, although it definitely wasn't pretty.  In a game with lots of physical play, Crown Point pressured Highland into 11 turnovers in the first quarter alone.  A lot of those forced turnovers could be credited to freshman Cassie Pruzin, who had four of her team-high nine steals in the first quarter alone.  A strong offensive showing by junior Amy Zondor gave the Bulldogs a real boost, although CP only led the Trojans 8-3 at the end of the first and 12-5 at the end of the half.  Highland made a run at CP late in the third quarter, but some solid free throw shooting in the fourth by Alex Webster (6 for 7) and Pruzin (4 for 4) helped the Bulldogs win 35-26 down the stretch.  You can access the complete game recap and game photos on our Schedule page.  (12/16/01)

  • Former Lady Bulldog La'Kea Harvey leads Ancilla in win
When La'Kea Harvey played for the Bulldogs last season, she came off the bench to back up center Carissa Triplett.  La'Kea, only 5'8, was definitely playing out of position, but she did a fine job for the Bulldogs whenever called upon to do so.  Now at Ancilla College, La'Kea is playing her natural position at forward, but it looks like that experience with physical post play in high school is paying off.  In a win over Andrews University last weekend, La'Kea led Ancilla to a 66-30 victory with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.  Ancilla coach Dave Liverance says that La'Kea "continues to improve game by game."  You can read about La'Kea and the game in the Plymouth Pilot News.  (12/16/01)

  • Lady Bulldogs take it to their neighbors to the north for a DAC win
Crown Point downed the quick and athletic Merrillville Pirates 68-35 in a convincing conference win Friday night to go up 6-2 on the young season.  Senior Alex Webster was a force for the Bulldogs with 15 points, 12 steals, 7 assists and 6 rebounds, while frosh Cassie Pruzin, in her first varsity start, put up 14 points to go with 3 rebounds and 2 steals.  Senior Janel Heneghan chipped in 9 with 6 rebounds, while soph Blayre Reeves matched Heneghan in points and added 3 assists for good measure.  Complete game details can be found in The Times and the Post-Tribune.  (12/8/01)

  • Crown Point has the best girls basketball fans anywhere, bar none!
Where else in Indiana do you see teenage boys dressed as women, WWF wrestlers or cartons of of your favorite beverage at a girls basketball game?  Nowhere but in Crown Point!   The Lady Bulldogs have been enjoying a great following among students who have really gotten into the spirit of things to make girls games as much fun in the stands as it is on the floor. The Lady Bulldogs are also drawing lots of community fans and former CPLB parents who are happy to see the girls performing so well this season.  After getting off to a good start with some exciting play, the Lady Bulldogs couldn't be happier to see the stands fill up on game nights, especially at home games.  Throw in THE ABSOLUTE best pep band in the state, to go along with premier pom and cheerleading squads, and you've got the greatest girls game atmosphere in the state.  Thanks to everyone for supporting the Lady Bulldogs this season!  (12/8/01)

  • Crown Point headed for difficult stretch of games
The Lady Dogs will have to be playing their best basketball over the next two weeks when they host 3A Highland on Tuesday, 4A No. 16 Valparaiso on Saturday, and then Lake Central the following Wednesday.  All three teams are capable of giving the Bulldogs big problems if they are not prepared to play.  Highland, a young team that has been improving with each game this season, is poised for a big win after downing Hobart last week.  Valparaiso, who lost their opener to East Chicago, has been on a roll ever since, with some big wins over Lafayette Jeff, Carmel, Andrean and Plymouth. They will be seeking revenge after the Bulldogs took away their hopes for another DAC title last season.  Finally, Lake Central is a much improved team over last season and has some terrific perimeter shooters to go with a tall and deep inside game for the complete package.   They have had good wins over Carmel, Lafayette Jeff, Portage and Munster.  All three games will be broadcast on WHLP 89.9 FM radio.  (12/8/01)

  • Lady Bulldogs move to No. 10 in Sagarin Ratings
Crown Point moved up six positions from earlier in the week to No. 10 in the latest Sagarin Ratings.  The Bulldogs are listed as having played the 17th toughest schedule in the state so far this season.   Strength of schedule ratings change throughout the season as opponents fall and rise in the ratings.  The latest ratings recognize Crown Point as the top team in NWI, followed by Valparaiso at No. 23, Lake Central at No. 25, and Gary West at No. 28.  The Bulldogs will play both Valparaiso and Lake Central during the next two weeks.  Sagarin bases his ratings on margin of victory and strength of schedule.  So far, Crown Point's only losses have been to Sagarin No. 3 Warsaw (by 11 points) and No. 4 Wawasee (by 7 points). (12/8/01)

  • Former Lady Bulldog La'Kea Harvey playing for Ancilla JC
Many of you may not know that former Lady Bulldog La'Kea Harvey ('01) is playing for Ancilla Junior College in Donaldson, Indiana.  Through Ancilla's first three games, La'Kea, now playing at the forward position instead of at center as she did at CP, averaged 3.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 13.3 minutes of play per game.  She is also shooting a solid 45% from the field.  As of November 20, the Lady Chargers were 3-3 on the season.  (12/8/01)

  • Webster named "Pepsi Player of the Week" in The Times
For the second time this season, senior Alex Webster was named The Times Pepsi Player of the Week.  Alex was recognized for putting up 39 points in two games last week against Portage and Wawasee.  (12/8/01)

  • Lady Dogs get votes in latest ICGSA Poll

  • Crown Point falls to No. 3 Wawasee
The Lady Bulldogs gave a good effort against the Warriors of Wawasee and their star guard Shanna Zolman over the weekend.  Although the final margin of the game was a 7-point win for Wawasee, CP came within 1 point several times in the last quarter before Wawasee went into a half-court spread, forcing the Bulldogs to foul.  Although CP lost, there were many bright spots during the night, including an outstanding defensive effort as a team, a 23-point performance by senior Alex Webster and some solid play with a young lineup on the floor.  Wawasee's star guard was held 9 points under her average, as she was forced to make some tough shots.  The Lady 'Dogs will take a great deal from this game and will use what they learned to become a better team.   You can read about this game in The Times and Post-Tribune online aritcles.  (12/3/01)

  • Lady Bulldogs to face No. 19 Warsaw on Friday
In just one of a number of difficult road trips this season, Crown Point will travel Friday evening to the home of the Warsaw Tigers, one of the nicest gymnasiums in Indiana.  Warsaw has a fine team this season, and returns a number of starters, including sharpshooter and Indiana Junior All Star Hilary O'Connell (18 ppg last season).  Warsaw will be looking to even the score after a disappointing outing last season at Crown Point, when the Tigers fell 78-54.  Both teams will come into Friday's game with undefeated 3-0 records.   (11/21/01)

  • IHSAA sets tournament schedule
The Indiana High School Athletic Association has set the schedule and sites for the 2001-02 IHSAA State Tournament.  The Lady Bulldogs will be playing in competitive Sectional No. 2 at Portage, which includes DAC opponents Valparaiso, Portage, Hobart, Chesterton and Merrillville.  If CP is good enough to get out of sectional play, they will move on to the Valparaiso Regional, which will be played in a four-team format on a Saturday, much better than the mid-week, one-game regional that the Lady Bulldogs played at Highland last season.  Teams that feed into the Valparaiso Regional include the winners from the sectionals at Gary West Side, South Bend Riley and Goshen.  The one-game North Semi-State will be at Plymouth at 3:30 p.m., after the 3A North Semi-State at the same location.  The State Finals are at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.  All dates and times are now available on the CPLB schedule.  (10/26/01)

  • Senior Alex Webster commits to D1 Southern Miss
Senior guard Alex Webster has committed to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg to play Division 1 basketball next season.  She will receive a full ride and play the point guard position for the Golden Eagles, who will have a frontcourt lineup of 6'7, 6'5 and 6'3 when she arrives..  Alex chose USM over offers from Tulsa, Denver, Bowling Green, Fordham and Loyola.  USM is in competitive Conference USA, which sent six teams to post-season play last year.  The conference schedule will bring Alex back to the Midwest on occasion when they play DePaul in Chicago, Marquette in Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Louisville and St. Louis.  The Golden Eagles also play Purdue.  Alex is the first Lady Bulldog to commit to a Division 1 basketball program since Tracy Roller ('88) committed to Eastern Illinois.  She will sign a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period this November.  (10/18/01)

  • Alex Webster named to Indiana's "Tremendous Twenty-Six"

Crown Point's Alex Webster received a high honor during the preseason when she was named to the Indiana High School Basketball Guide Tremendous Twenty-Six.

Senior guard Alex Webster was recently named to the Indiana High School Basketball Guide's Tremendous Twenty-Six, honoring the top 13 girls and 13 boys players in the state.  The guide, which is published by High School Sports Publications right here in Crown Point, is expected to be out either later this month or in early November.  Alex and the other honorees will appear in a group photo on the cover.  Crown Point will face several other Tremendous Twenty-Six players during the season when the 'Dogs play Shanna Zolman of Wawasee, Lauren Bechtold of Hebron, Jamie Gutowski of Andrean and Megan Dossen of Ft. Wayne Luers.  To contend with this competition, Alex will look to a strong CP senior class for some W's in the win column.  Besides Alex, the CPLB senior class includes point guard Ashley Plumley, forward Janel Heneghan and center Carissa Triplett. • Team practice begins Monday!
At first it seemed like the season would never get here.  Now, it's just around the corner!  Where did the time go?  As the Rock of WWF fame would say, "IT DOESN'T MATTER!"  All that matters now is that the Lady Bulldogs will take the court for the first day of tryouts and practice on Monday, October 15.  The lineup at the start might be a bit thin, as the volleyball team, which has a high number of basketball players as members, will still be practicing for sectionals.  However,  you can bet that Coach May will have the girls "busy" until then!  Also, just a reminder to those players who did not play a fall sport, you MUST have a complete doctor's physical prior to October 15 in order to participate in practice.  Forms can be obtained from the Athletic Director's office or online at the Indiana High School Athletic Association.  (10/10/01)

  • Former Lady Bulldog Tracy Roller named head coach at Ball State
Indiana All-Star and former Lady Bulldog Tracy Roller ('88) was named the new head coach at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, in June.  Roller, whose name is peppered throughout the Lady Bulldogs All-Time Records, will take over the head position for the Cardinals after two years as an assistant at BSU.  Tracy also was an assistant coach at Valparaiso University and head coach at Gavit High School and Jennings County High School.   Tracy played college basketball at Eastern Illinois and was a GTW two-time GTE Academic All-American.  Coach May couldn't be prouder or happier for Tracy, who is "living her dream."  You can view the details about Tracy's new appointment on the Ball State University women's basketball website.  (7/13/01)

  • Alex Webster performs well in Junior All-Stars v. Indiana All-Stars game

Crown Point's Alex Webster (#13) gets in front of Notre Dame recruit Jackie Batteast on a free throw attempt.  Alex did CP proud with a good defensive and offensive performance against the Indiana All Stars.

Rising senior Alex Webster, wearing lucky No. 13, made a good showing at Lawrence North High School in the Junior All-Stars v. Indiana All-Stars game.  Playing four different positions in 14 minutes, including some interesting time at the power forward position against Miss Basketball Shyra Ely (Tennessee) and All-Star Jackie Batteast (Notre Dame), Webster held her own going 2-5 from the field and picking up two steals and taking a charge from All-Star Jenny DeMuth.  You can view more pictures from the Junior-Senior All-Star game at the Region Roundball Review.  (The link to the photos is on the home page there.)  (7/13/01)

  • Incoming frosh are camp champs
Coaches Tom May and Scott Reed coached the incoming freshman team to a championship win at the Spiece girls team camp on July 8.  The frosh 'Dogs defeated Plymouth for the camp title win.  Also of note was the performance of rising frosh Cassie Pruzin, who won the one-on-one title while at camp.  Cassie is expected to be a contributor on varsity this season for the Lady Bulldogs.  Also going attending the Spiece camp as student coaches for the incoming 7th graders were Lady Bulldogs Nikki Borys, Carissa Triplett and Alex Webster.  (7/13/01)

  • Car washes are a big success
Through the efforts of the Lady Bulldogs who washed over 130 vehicles, from motorcycles to a motor home, in June and July, the Lady Bulldogs have partially replenished the team coffers for the upcoming season.  With a great profit at the first car wash on June 23 and an okay profit at the second car wash on July 7, the girls will have funds for this season's team banquet.  Hopes are to raise more money for a team ad for the 2001-2002 edition of Hoosier Basketball Magazine.  Efforts to raise funds will continue throughout the summer.  If you know someone who would like to help sponsor the magazine ad, an Indiana basketball tradition, please call Jackie Webster at 988-3109.  Thanks to all the girls and parents who helped out with the car washes, especially Bette Plumley, who laundered and packed all of the towels used to dry off cars! • Lady Bulldogs toughen up schedule for 2001-2002
The Lady Bulldogs squad will face greater challenges during the 2001-2002 season.  Four new quality opponents have been added to next season's lineup.  Ft. Wayne Luers, which was the 2A state champion for the past three seasons, will play the Bulldogs in their first season as a 3A contender.  Both Martinsville, which captured two state titles in the '90s, and Ft. Wayne Carroll will join Gary Wallace and Crown Point to complete the field for the Crown Point Holiday Shootout in late December.  Finally, the ICGSA No. 1 ranked 3A team last season, Wawasee, will showcase nationally-ranked guard, Shanna Zolman, against the Crown Point lineup during December.  Wawasee, which will debut as a 4A team in 2001-2002, will be looking for historical retribution after losing to Crown Point in the IHSAA State Finals in 1985.  Looks to be a competitive season for the Lady Bulldogs!  (5/28/01)
