Crown Point
vs. Michigan City

Crown Point 74, Michigan City 38

The Crown Point Lady Bulldogs found some relief starting out the 2000 side of their grueling 1999-2000 schedule with a convincing DAC win against the Wolves of Michigan City.  For the first time this season, the Bulldogs scored over the 20-point mark in a single quarter, and went over that mark three times during this game.

Junior Sarah Zondor got things started with some stellar shooting, knocking down the first nine points of the game, including two treys off of great screens and open looks from her teammates.  Sophomore Alex Webster put the pressure on defensively against the Wolves with 3 steals and 2 blocks in the frame.  The Bulldogs continued a great team game for the entire first quarter, scoring a season-high quarter total of 24 points, including 4 points each from seniors Katie Lemke and Erin Plumley, to take a 24-13 lead into the second quarter.

The 'Dogs continued the offensive run in the second, outscoring MC 21-5 with penetration by Webster and outside scoring by Zondor and junior Amanda Bernard.  The defensive pressure continued as well as CP picked up 7 steals in the quarter, and Webster stopped a sure drive to the bucket by MC's Loretta McGee with a taken charge.  Seniors Lemke, Plumley and Allyson Carnahan swept the defensive boards to limit MC putbacks, helping CP enjoy a commanding 45-18 lead heading into the locker room at the break.

CP's intensity wavered in the third after pulling off the press, and the Bulldogs only managed 7 points in the quarter, with MC matching the Dogs point for point.  CP picked it up again in the fourth and took a 40-point lead with a 15-2 scoring run in the first 5 minutes of the frame, which included 6 points and 3 rebounds from Bernard.  Scoring by soph Ashley Plumley and frosh Nicole Smoljan helped round out the 22-13 scoring edge for the quarter.

As a team, this was the best offensive effort put together by the Bulldogs so far this season, with four players in double figures.  Senior Plumley was an even and consistent scoring force inside every quarter and Zondor, Lemke and Bernard worked both the offensive and defensive boards well to get second looks and limit MC putbacks.  This was by far the best floor game played by the CP guards as well, who combined for 14 assists on the night.
