Point 67 The first quarter saw the Bulldogs behind by 2 on stellar shooting from a could-not-miss Kougar squad, which did not miss but 1-2 shots in the frame. A shooting war in the quarter between sophomores Webster (4 treys) of CP and Lesley Cunningham (10 pts) of KV was fun to watch. The Bulldogs broke it wide open in the 2nd with a 21-8 run, creating opportunities off of 5 steals (3 for Zondor) and limiting KV scoring with good defensive rebounding. Five different CP players contributed to the run to give the Bulldogs an 11-point lead at the half. The Bulldogs faltered somewhat in the third when Webster sat at about the 5:30 mark with 4 fouls, which gave CP trouble bringing the ball up the court against KV's frantic full court press. The result was two 10-second calls, but the 'Dogs continued the defensive pressure on the other end and converted off of steals to keep the margin comfortable. After KV went on a 6-0 run to pull within 10 in the last minute of the quarter, CP snuffed out the comeback with two buckets in the last 20 seconds of the quarter. Outsized junior Amanda Bernard muscled her way in for a bank at the 20-second mark, and after a KV turnover, sub point Ashley Plumley delivered a dead-on pass to Nikki Borys, who swished a 4-footer at the buzzer to get the lead back up to 14. Bernard continued to outplay her bigger opponents in the post throughout the fourth, picking up 4 rebounds and 4 points in the quarter. The Bulldogs mostly saw the free throw line in the last 2:30 of the game, and held solid on 7-9 shooting from the charity stripe, including a 4-5 effort by Webster. CP got its best game yet out of junior Zondor, who distributed the ball to open teammates and created opportunities off of good defense. Sub point Plumley continues to gain confidence in difficult situations and came off the bench to score 5 points in about 10 minutes of play. Junior Bernard continues to impress by outplaying bigger and taller opponents in the post, yanking down 6 rebounds while scoring 8 points. Senior Katie Lemke played tough as usual and put in 6 points, while senior Allyson Carnahan swatted away two KV shots for two blocks. Kankakee Valley is a very nice team, especially
considering they were without the services of leading senior scorer Kristen
Kruchowski, who was out with an ankle sprain. The Kougars are a young team,
starting 3 sophomores on this particular night. Jill Kikkert, a 6'2 mobile soph
forward, was very good coming off the bench and scored 10 points. Watch for
developing 6'6 JV frosh Amanda DeVries to be a definite factor for the Kougars
in the future.
