Bulldogs slip by Highland

Poor shooting, errors, plague both teams

CROWN POINT -- The say Bulldogs make good watch dogs and Crown Point's Bulldogs were certainly that Tuesday night as they watched Highland make mistake after mistake in a game that added new meaning to winning ugly.

Times No. 2 Crown Point (7-2) held on for a 35-26 win as Highland (5-4) made only 1 of 16 shots in the first half and committed 17 turnovers during that span.

The Bulldogs faired slightly better, connecting on 5 of 26 attempts.

"We outplayed them in the first half," said Crown Point coach Tom May. "We probably had three times as many shots as they did, and yet I looked up at the scoreboard (12-5) and saw we were not that far ahead."

Highland went 14:43 without a basket until Julie DeMuth scored with 1:42 left in the half. DeMuth accounted for all five of her team's first-half points.

"We made a couple of mistakes in the third quarter and they hit a 3 and a few other baskets and before you knew it, they were right back in the game," May said. "This was a game we should have put away in the first half. We had too many missed opportunities."

The Trojans came to life in the third quarter by running off nine unanswered points and cutting the CP lead to 23-18 after three quarters of play.

"Our kids battled all the way and mistakes early on cost us dearly," said Highland coach Chris Huppenthal. "We knew we were going to be trapped and we just didn't get the ball to the right places."

Crown Point was playing without Ashley Plumley, one of its starting guards. Plumley didn't dress for the game because of a team matter.

"She's a good kid and will be back," May said.

Crown Point was led by Alex Webster's 13 points. DeMuth led Highland with eight.
