Crown Point 68, Michigan City 32
After a disappointing loss to Martinsville in the championship game of the Lady Bulldogs Holiday Shootout the weekend before, the 'Dogs were ready for a good win to kick off 2002, and they did just that. Using a strong inside-outside attack from the outset against the Wolves of Michigan City, Crown Point racked up a convincing Duneland Athletic Conference win to put the Bulldogs at 3-1 in conference play. Senior center Carissa Triplett started the scoring off of a Blayre Reeves assist to open up a 10-2 run in the first 3:47 of the game. The Wolves ran off four points over the next 2:30 to close the gap to four, but junior Amy Zondor and senior Alex Webster combined for three treys off of three consecutive feeds from frosh Cassie Pruzin to up the score to 19-7. A Zondor steal was converted into a layup by senior Ashley Plumley with 15 seconds left in the quarter to punctuate a 21-8 lead at the first break. Zondor opened up the scoring for the Bulldogs in the second with a jumper off of a Danielle Brueck assist, and Webster followed that up with another trey. The Wolves started to find their stroke in the second quarter and over the next five minutes kept pace with the Bulldogs scoring 11 points to CP's 12. Both teams went scoreless from the 1:15 mark on until Pruzin ripped through the MC full court defense on the final possession of the half to get the ball into Triplett's hands for a bucket at the buzzer, giving CP a 40-21 lead heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Reeves put
the Bulldogs on the board early with a putback in traffic, and Triplett followed
that up with a nice post move to lose the MC defense in the paint for another
bucket on the next possession. Zondor buried her third trey of the night,
and then Triplett ruled the lane with four straight buckets for the
Bulldogs. The CP defense was keeping the Wolves in check during that run,
holding Michigan City scoreless from the field until the 3:35 mark of the
quarter. The game was pretty physical throughout, although it reached a
pretty intense level when Webster went in for a layup, but was called for a
charge despite being undercut hard on the shot and landing flat on her back,
which caused her to leave the game with less than a minute to go in the quarter.
Reeves hit one of two free throws at the :33 mark, giving the Bulldogs a 55-24
edge at the end of three. This was a terrific all-around effort by the entire team with scoring provided by 11 Lady Bulldogs. Carissa Triplett, after having a bit of a scoring slump over the past few games, came out with big numbers, including 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Junior Amy Zondor had a career night with 15 points to go along with three assists. Alex Webster had a good all-around floor game with 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals to go with 8 points, and Cassie Pruzin made big floor contributions with 6 rebounds and 4 assists to go with 4 points. Up next for the Bulldogs are
the Lady Kougars of Kankakee Valley on Tuesday, January 8.
