After dropping their first game of the season to Warsaw the previous weekend, the Lady Bulldogs were hoping to assert themselves against a rebuilding Lowell team. They did to a degree with a lopsided win, but could not walk away feeling too good about this one as a team. A number of wide-open missed shots in the first quarter set the tone for an error-riddled game, and despite the win, the girls and Coach May were not happy campers on the bus trip back home. Alex Webster opened the scoring for CP with a trey off of an Ashley Plumley assist less than a minute into the game, followed by a Janel Heneghan jumper about a minute later. However, it would be a frustrating quarter as the Dogs missed five easy buckets in the paint off of dead-on passes from the backcourt. Sophomore Blayre Reeves salvaged the quarter for her teammates with five points on two buckets and a free throw for the Bulldogs to take a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The dry spell continued in the second quarter, with no scoring from CP until two minutes in from frosh Jill Weiand. Another bucket by Heneghan was followed by four points from Lowell, closing the gap to 14-9, but then the Bulldogs opened up a 7-2 run to close out the quarter to go up 21-10 at the half. Crown Point finally opened it up in the third quarter, outscoring Lowell 17-1 in the first six minutes of the quarter behind 10 points from senior center Carissa Triplett. Senior Steph Swanson capped off the run with a trey on a Webster assist. With one minute to go in the quarter, freshman Cassie Pruzin sank two free throws and junior Lauren Rhodes dropped a close one in off of a Danielle Brueck assist to put the Bulldogs up 42-14 at the end of three. In the final quarter, Lowell outscored CP 15-13, but it was too little too late to challenge for the win. Triplett, Webster and Pruzin combined for 11 of Crown Point's 13 points in the final quarter to maintain the win. Leading scorer for CP was Carissa Triplett with 16, followed by Alex Webster with 12. Blayre Reeves and Cassie Pruzin each chipped in with 7 apiece. Stats for CP: Triplett
16 (5r 2s 1b), Webster 12 (3a 3r 1s), Reeves 7 (8r 5s 3a), Pruzin 7 (3r 2a 3s),
Heneghan 4 (3r 2s), Weiand 4, Swanson 3, Rhodes 2
Crown Point 44, Lowell 13 – Crown Point’s Junior Varsity dominated throughout the contest, and came away with their fourth win against one loss with a convincing 44-13 thrashing of the Lady Red Devils of Lowell. After going scoreless in the first period, Lowell finally managed to score their first basket early in the second quarter, but found themselves trailing 28-2 at the half. |
