Crown Point vs. Valparaiso
Crown Point senior Sarah Zondor jump-started the Bulldogs in the first half with 11 and juniors Alex Webster and Carissa Triplett brought Crown Point home by scoring all of the Bulldogs' 18 points in the final quarter to defeat DAC foe Valparaiso by 11. In
a game that reeked of miscues and turnovers by both teams, including a
season-high 9 traveling violations for the Bulldogs (it's the feet you're
supposed to watch, guys, not the upper body), the Bulldogs maintained the lead
almost throughout, although not by much. After
going on a 10-2 run in the first 6 minutes of the game, Coach Greg Kirby called
a Valpo timeout, and the Vikings came out in attack mode. A trey by Courtney
Rosenbaum and two free throws by Lee Traynham closed the score to 10-7 by the
end of the first frame. The Bulldogs relied on senior Sarah Zondor in the
first quarter and beginning of the second, as she scored 9 straight points for
CP to keep a step ahead of Valpo.
To
start the second quarter, Valpo went on a 8-2 run to take their only lead in the
game going up 15-12 with 4:44 left to go in the first half. But CP responded
with clutch buckets by seniors Amanda Bernard and Nikki Borys, two
freebies by Zondor and a big trey by Webster with :27 to go to
make it 21-16 at the break. The
third quarter started off slow and shaky for both teams, with no one scoring for
the first 3:30, but a cross-court pass from Webster to Borys found
the senior open behind the three-point line and she knocked one down to extend
the lead to 24-16. Although the Bulldogs were whistled early and often in this
quarter for fouls (6) and travel violations (5), they managed to fight off a
Rosenbaum flurry of 7 points, including another trey, to keep their lead intact,
but only by four. In
the fourth quarter, the inside-outside CP junior duo of Webster and Triplett
brought the Bulldogs home. Webster exploded for 12 of her 15 points in
the fourth and dished out two assists to inside partner Triplett who
scored at will despite Valpo's tough defensive pressure, expanding the margin to
11 for the final score.
Give
lots of credit to the outstanding Valpo defense for taking the Bulldogs (except
for determined Zondor in the first half) out of their game for most of
the first three quarters. The 'Dogs are not used to being chained up and that's
exactly what Valpo did. Valpo got a great game from senior Courtney Rosenbaum,
who led all scorers with 21, including two treys, which is a new and effective
aspect to her game. The 'Dogs had three players in double figures, and received scoring from three others. Valpo's Rosenbaum was the only player of 5 that scored over 4 points. Webster struggled early, but came alive after she went down midway through third quarter with the wind knocked out of her. CP received a spark off the bench from junior Janel Heneghan, who nabbed two steals and pulled down 5 rebounds in limited minutes, and senior Amanda Bernard did everything right in the first quarter to aid CP's quick start. Junior Ashley Plumley gave extremely valuable minutes with outstanding ballhandling and passing against the full-court defensive pressure of Valpo, especially in the last quarter.
