  • Borys and Zondor receive basketball scholarships
Seniors Nikki Borys (6'0 F) and Sarah Zondor (5'7 G) have both been offered and have accepted scholarship aid to play basketball in college.  Sarah will attend DePauw University in Greencastle, where she will join an experienced team that went 19-6 in 2000-2001 and returns all of its players next season.  Nikki will attend Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.  An article in the Crown Point Star outlines the specifics behind Nikki's choice.  Best of luck to both girls and we look forward to following your college teams next season!

  • Zondor plays in NWI Classic; Coach May leads East Team to victory
Senior Sarah Zondor recently played in the annual Northwest Indiana Classic at East Chicago High School, pitting some of the best seniors in NWI against one another in this all-star event.  Coach Tom May served as the head coach for the East Team, which defeated the West Team 75-43.  Sarah scored 8 points and added 4 steals and 2 assists for the winning team.  The Times had a preview article about the game, as well as a recap of the game itself.

  • Zondor competes at Top 40 Workout
Senior Sarah Zondor attended the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 40 Workout at Ben Davis High School on March 11.  Sarah was invited as one of the top 15 guards in the state to attend and try out for a chance to be on the Indiana All Stars.  A proud Coach May, who accompanied Sarah to the Top 40 Workout, gives his senior guard a headlock-hug after a good showing at the day's events, at right.

News for August, 2000

It's been a pretty busy summer for many of the Lady Bulldogs this year! A lot of the girls have been working summer jobs, playing AAU, attending camps, and/or playing ball at open gym.  All this off-season activity created a busy schedule for the girls, and I'm sure the time just seemed to fly by.  So with basketball season right around the corner, here's a quick look at some team activities and individual accomplishments experienced by the girls this summer.

Car Wash Fundraisers.  Lady Bulldog car washes were held on June 24 and July 18 at Segert's Amoco at Main & North Streets. Both car washes were a huge success.  The girls worked hard, but also had a lot of fun. They washed well over a hundred cars between the two dates.  The car washes are an excellent way for the players to get out among their fans in the community.  Several family members, friends, and die-hard Lady Bulldog fans stopped by and helped the girls generate some hard earned dollars for the program. Thanks to everyone who showed their support by coming by. A special thank you also goes to Segert's Amoco.  Each year they allow the girls to more or less take over their service station for the car washes, and we appreciate their support.  The following girls participated in this summer's car wash fundraisers:  Nikki Borys, Amanda Bernard, Sarah Zondor, La'Kea Harvey, Ashley Plumley, Chrissy Hodorowicz, Janel Heneghan, Stephanie Swanson, Emily Tromp, Heather Dallman, Nicole Smoljan, Amy Zondor, Keri Cuculich, Allison Isailovich, Jill Maynard, Kathleen Fredericks, Laura Hawes, Danielle Brueck, and Katie LoGreco.

Open Gym.  Open gym at Crown Point started in May this year and ended in July.  Each night the gym was filled with former, current, and future Lady Bulldog players. The competition was intense and, for the first time, even the coaches got into the action. A new IHSAA ruling allowed coaches to scrimmage against players this summer. Although fast breaks were limited (and quite comical at times), the mostly-coaches team stayed on the floor quite a bit by taking advantage of their many, many, many years of experience. Besides, word has it that they got all the calls from "the refs" (a/k/a "the coaches"). Seriously, it sure looked like open gym went very well this summer. The coaching staff seemed pleased with attendance and happy that the girls were taking advantage of the time to improve their skills. Check out the message board for some comments on open gym by Lady Bulldog Head Coach, Tom May.

Team Camp.  For the second year in a row since the change in IHSAA rules, the Bulldogs held a team camp for incoming players in grades 9 through 12.  It was an opportunity for the coaching staff to see what the freshman class might offer this season, as well as an opportunity to touch on changes in offensive and defensive strategies for 2000-2001.  This also gave the girls an opportunity to see areas of their game where they need to improve before October 16, the first day of basketball practice.

Individual Player Summer Basketball Activities.  A number of players were involved in non-school related basketball activities during the summer.  Hopefully we'll see the results of that participation when the practice season rolls around in October.

Senior Sarah Zondor brings the ball up on the fast break at the 17U AAU State Tournament.  Sarah's team finished 5th at the state tournament.

Senior guard Sarah Zondor had a good summer playing for the 17U Indiana Storm AAU team based out of Huntington, Indiana.  The Indiana Storm team is coached by Rick Winter and his daughter Lisa.  Lisa Winter is a former Miss Basketball from Huntington North High School, and later starred at Valparaiso University.  Sarah played several different positions for the Storm, and had a great summer season. The Indiana Storm made a great showing at a number of summer tournaments, taking 1st place at the Disney World Spring Fling in Orlando, Florida, 2nd in the All-American Cage Classic, and 5th in the Indiana 17U AAU State Tournament. In addition to AAU, Sarah also attended two college exposure camps this summer -- the Blue Star and Blue Chip in Terre Haute and Ft. Wayne.

Senior Nikki Borys makes her move against the defense of NorthWood junior Carol Duncan, who plays for the Indiana Storm. Nikki's team unfortunately lost this opener at the 17U AAU State Tournament.

Senior center Nikki Borys and junior guard Stephanie Swanson also enjoyed a great summer of AAU competition playing for the 17U Hoosier Thunder. The Hoosier Thunder was coached by Mark Martin, father of Kouts High School scoring star Erica Martin, and featured several standouts from the Porter County Conference.  Both Nikki and Stephanie represented the Lake County faction of the team very well, and received a tremendous amount of playing time. Both improved their individual play and added several aspects to their game that will pay dividends for the team in the upcoming season.

Junior point guard Ashley Plumley had an excellent summer in both open gym and AAU. She played very well for the 15U Duneland Lakers AAU team, and was one of the top players on the team.  Her confident and aggressive style of play will help the Lady Bulldogs this season.  We expect to see Ashley in an expanded role for the varsity Bulldogs this season after splitting her time on varsity and JV last season.

Junior Alex Webster scores against the defense of the 18U Indiana's Finest team.  Alex's team qualified to play in the 16U Nationals in Chattanooga, TN, and finished 9th in the nation.

Junior guard Alex Webster also had an outstanding summer playing AAU basketball.  She played for the 16U Mohr Magic team based near Indianapolis. Alex played a variety of positions for Mohr Magic, which placed 2nd in the Indiana's Finest Invitational, 2nd at the Memorial Invitational Tournament in Michigan, and 2nd in the Indiana 16U AAU State Tournament, which qualified them for nationals.  Alex and her Mohr Magic team also had an impressive showing at the 16U AAU Nationals, finishing 9th in the nation.  In that tournament, she played against a variety of college recruits already committed to a number of Division I colleges. In addition to AAU, Alex also was invited to attend Notre Dame Indiana's Best All-Star Camp. the University of Michigan Elite Camp and the IBN/Hoosierland Report Top 40 Workout.

Lady Bulldog Send Off.  Assistant varsity coach Nancy (Cowan) Eksten invited last year's varsity players to a summer picnic at her home at the beginning of this month.  It was one last chance for the team to give grads Katie Lemke, Allyson Carnahan and Erin Plumley best wishes before heading off to college.  Katie will be attending DePauw University in Greencastle, Allyson will be at Purdue University in Lafayette, and Erin will be going to college in Kentucky.  We will miss you, grads, so be sure to drop us an e-mail now and then!

Fall Sports.  The fall high school sports season is underway, and a number of our Lady Bulldogs will also be involved in fall sports.  Volleyball claims the largest contingent of the Lady Bulldogs.  Sarah Zondor, La'Kea Harvey, Ashley Plumley, Janel Heneghan, Nicole Smoljan, Amy Zondor, Keri Cuculich, Allison Isailovich, Jill Maynard and a number of others will be hitting the ball over the nets instead of through the nets this fall.  Sarah Myers and Katie LoGreco, who established herself as a definite freshman threat on the trails last fall, will be competing for the Crown Point cross country team.  Finally, Alex Webster and Tara Menacher will be the only two Lady Bulldogs on the soccer fields for soccer head coach (and JV basketball coach) Mike Malaski.  Lady Bulldog manager Laura Buchelt will assist Coach Malaski as manager of the soccer team again this fall. Good luck to everyone participating in a fall sport this school year.  And to the Lady Bulldogs who aren't in a fall sport, keep conditioning and shooting... the first basketball practice is just over two months away!

News for May, 2000

The Lady Bulldogs website has undergone somewhat of an overhaul after a less than good effort on my part in keeping up with our site during this past season.  Please accept my apologies, especially the seniors, who did not get their due here on this site for their final season as Lady Bulldogs.  The Webster household was in turmoil from October to March for various reasons, many of which you all know about, and my hope is to do a better job with site upkeep next season.

A new IHSAA ruling that will allow players to participate in open gym situations in the spring is now in place, and as a result, the first open gym is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, at the high school.  Another ruling approved this year will allow coaches to instruct up to two players at a time during open gym, and yet another will allow coaches to scrimmage against the girls in open gym.  (Break out that Bengay, coaches!)

In case you missed it, our very own JV Head Coach Mike Malaski was featured in The Times on Friday, May 12, in the Prep Beat column.  Coach Malaski, as most of you know, is an accomplished musician and just recently produced his own CD called, "Hey, Coach!"  He will be having a benefit concert and CD release event at CPHS on Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, at 7:30 p.m.  Admission is $5.00, and all proceeds will go directly to the Lady Bulldogs basketball and soccer programs.  Be sure to drop by!

Be sure and check out the 2000-2001 schedule for the Lady Bulldogs.  The good news is that the majority of our games are AT HOME next season.  (YIPPEEEE!)  The bad news is that some of our strongest opponents -- Valpo, Lake Central, Portage, Highland, Andrean and an improving LaPorte team -- will have home court advantage.

Besides open gym, the Lady Bulldogs camp, and team camp, a few of our varsity players will be busy this summer playing organized summer basketball.  Sarah Zondor is playing with the 17U Indiana Storm out of Huntington, which also features Andrean's Jamie Gutowski.  Alex Webster is playing with the 16U Mohr Magic out of Indianapolis, together with Highland's Jenny DeMuth.  And, Nikki Borys and Stephanie Swanson have teamed up on the 17U Hoosier Thunder team, which has a number of Porter County Conference standouts on its roster, including Kouts sharpshooter Erica Martin.  Ashley Plumley is playing with the 15U Duneland Lady Lakers.  Hopefully a full summer of hard work in many forms will show up on the floor in November!

Speaking of summer basketball, congratulations to the 13U Crown Point Tigers, coached by Pete Regashus, who recently won the Indiana AAU Level II State Championship for their age group.  Team members include 8th graders Whitney Brown, Melissa Cooper, Blayre Reeves, Stephanie Sandilla, Teresa Kaminski, Amanda Wirtz, and Abby Hays, and 7th graders Cassie Pruzin, Kaitlyn Sertich, Lauren Mishevich, Jill Weiand and Michelle Kutanovski.  Interestingly, a few of the current varsity players were on a 13U team that accomplished the exact same feat in 1997.

Players, mark your calendar now for the team car washes scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, and Saturday, July 8, at Segert's Amoco at Main & North Streets.  You will be receiving phone calls from your teammates before these car wash days, but you might as well get them on the calendar now...

Within the next month or so, I am going to be adding a new area to the site called "Team Only."  It will be password protected and for players, coaches and their families only.  It will have a bulletin board for team events and player messages, an e-mail directory, Parents' Club notices and task schedules, and a few photos here and there that will be for viewing just by the Lady Bulldogs Family.  When it is up and running, I'll notify everyone of the password by e-mail or by word of mouth.  I don't know about all of you, but I am really looking forward to next season and the promise this team has for a good run.
