The early commitments keep rolling in for the UConn women.

Cassie Kerns, a 6-foot-3 forward from Valparaiso, Ind., gave UConn its third commitment for the Class of 2009 Thursday, two days before coach Geno Auriemma and associate coach Chris Dailey are to arrive in Valparaiso for a visit.

Kerns, who averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds as a junior at Valparaiso High School, chose UConn over Notre Dame, Kentucky and Michigan.

"Ever since I was a little girl, I've wanted to play for a national champion and in the WNBA," Kerns told the Indiana Region Roundball Review Thursday. "So I figured why not go to the school with the best record, the best coaches and best players? I was going to wait to make a decision after all of the official visits, but when Coach Auriemma offered, I knew that's where I wanted to go. So why wait?"

"Why wait?" has been the theme this summer. UConn has usually shied away from commitments before the heart of the fall recruiting period.

This season has seen a shift. Earlier this summer, UConn got oral commitments from guard Renee Montgomery of Charleston, W.Va., and forward Tahirah Williams of Montclair, N.J. Incoming high school junior Jacki Gemelos of Stockton, Calif., also committed.
