GREENFIELD — Twenty-minute halves, three officials, and a Sunday afternoon start.

Sure, the 16th annual North-South Indiana All-Star Classic at Greenfield-Central High School had all the feel of a college basketball game.

And Merrillville senior Julie DeMuth showed she could more than compete at the next level with a game-high 24 points during the North’s 96-85 victory over the South.

Bishop Noll’s Gary Patterson joined the act in the boys contest, with eight points and a game-best five assists in the North’s 105-91 win.

DeMuth was unstoppable as she dominated the paint with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. On the perimeter, the Ball State-bound Pirate hit three 3-pointers and added three assists and two steals.

“In this kind of game, you kind of see where you rank,” DeMuth said.

DeMuth’s former Duneland Conference foe, Valparaiso’s Lauren Hutton, added a 3-pointer and an assist in the win.

Hutton, who has yet to make a college decision, could select Purdue, Washington, DePauw or Valparaiso, with the latter three all offering the possibility of furthering her basketball career.

“The last year has been the best,” Hutton said. “When you’re a senior, it’s a lot more special.”

Patterson was special for four years at Noll. He served as the Warriors’ captain all four seasons, with his senior campaign culminating in being selected the Post-Tribune’s Player of the Year.

“I know I can play with the best players in the state,” said Patterson, who buried two 3-pointers in the second half.

In the girls game, the North rolled to a 53-38 halftime lead behind DeMuth, who scored 12 first-half points.

The South cut the gap to 85-79 with 5:30 remaining but could come no closer.

Wisconsin-bound Janese Banks of Ben Davis fronted the South with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

The North boys outscored the South 43-33 in the first 20 minutes, which included seven North players totaling at least four points.

The South could not match the North’s athleticism, especially from Indiana-bound James Hardy of Fort Wayne Elmhurst, who led both teams with 24 points (six less than his regular-season average) and 10 rebounds, while Fitzgerald Batteast of Indianapolis Arlington and IUPUI recruit George Hill of Indianapolis Broad Ripple each had 14 points. All three players rammed home massive dunks.

“You don’t see a lot of stuff like that where I come from,” Patterson said. “The game was real fast-paced and exciting.”

Patterson’s future teammate at Butler, A.J. Graves of White River Valley, scored three points for the South. Western Kentucky-bound Courtney Lee of Pike led the South with 16 points.
