Post-Tribune Staff Report

Three high school athletes — two girls basketball standouts and a football player — committed to colleges on Tuesday.

Jennifer VanderZanden, a 5-foot-10 center for Lake Central, will play for Indiana University at South Bend next season.

VanderZanden, a Post-Tribune third team all-area selection last season, averaged 13.8 points per game and 7.1 rebounds.

Her coach, Tom Megyesi, said she’s excited about playing for the NAIA school next year.

“She liked the players and she liked the campus,” he said. “It’s a place she knows she’ll fit in at.”

Merrillville’s Marshay Jolly, a 5-10 forward for the Pirates, also found a school to call home.

Coach Bob Maicher said she’ll sign a letter of intent sometime this week to play for Southern Indiana. Jolly averaged 10.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Pirates. She was also a third-team all-area selection for the Post-Tribune.

Munster’s Bart Banach, a first team all-area selection at wide receiver for the Mustangs, will attend Wabash College next year to play football. Banach was also first team all-state.

Banach broke the Mustangs’ record for receptions in a season last year (48), touchdowns catches (16) and touchdown catches in a game (4).

Banach carries a GPA of 4.19 and he scored 1,300 on the SAT.
